The river Danube

  • The river Danube flows 2,780 kilometres from its source in the Black Forest of Germany to join the Black Sea, and is Europe's second largest river.
  • The Danube basin encompasses 14 countries of Central and Eastern Europe, making it the most international river basin in the world.
  • Around 80 million people live in the Danube river basin and rely on the river for drinking water. It's also used for fishing, recreation and, often, disposal of wastewater and sewage.
  • The Danube has a long history of navigation and is a major shipping route. It's important to industry and supports many factories. It's also vital for the large-scale agricultural production which occurs along its banks.
